Nowadays, the glass in roof lanterns has been improved to a very high quality. The glazing quality is key to making your roof lantern quiet during the downpour.
High-quality glazed windows will also increase your roof lantern’s thermal properties to pinch those pennies on the heating bill.
You do not need planning permission for a roof lantern most of the time. However, there are regulations to keep in mind if you’d like to avoid needing planning permission. Generally, roof lanterns should not be larger than 150mm above the sloping plane of the roof or the height of the tallest part of the roof. Although planning permission isn't normally required, we would always recommend checking with your local planning department when carrying out any work.
Cleaning the interior part of a roof lantern just needs some light dusting here and there. Use a soft sponge or cloth with glass cleaning products and warm soapy water to keep the exterior frame clean. Keep soap to a minimum, and don’t use any materials that are too harsh as this can negatively affect the glass.
