What are bi-fold doors?

Bi-fold doors are extremely popular for a variety of reasons. These elegant patio doors open up with a series of panels so they can make the room appear spacious and allow more natural light inside. This type of patio door is a particular favourite with multi-generational families, as they offer adults the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and the garden while sitting inside as the youngsters play outdoors within earshot.

Bi-fold doors are also a fantastic choice for making a property or business more accessible for people with disabilities. The varying degrees that the doors can open up can provide better access for people who use wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking frames and walking aids. The bifold doors’ bottom rail can also be installed closer to the floor to easily facilitate a wheelchair ramp if required.

How will bi-fold doors make my home secure?

It’s a common misconception that bi-fold doors are not as secure as other patio doors, yet this particular style adds a dash of sophistication and security to your home. Generally, conservatories are considered the most vulnerable part of the home to attract an intrusion. However, this vulnerability is not due to the design of bi-fold doors. Bi-fold doors are one of the most secure designs available, beating even French doors and sliding doors

The type of glazing also matters too in terms of safety, not just for saving your money on heating and electric bills. The thinnest glazing that your bi-fold doors can withstand is double glazing – which itself is incredibly secure and sturdy! It’s also possible to tweak your design to include an extra layer of vinyl between the sheets of glass which renders glass cutters useless. What’s more, the internally beaded frame inside the bi-fold door design also overlaps for additional protection. What types of locks do bi-fold doors have?

The most common lock on bi-fold doors is a multi-point locking system. This tracking system has the doors attached inside to the gears on the bottom track, so it’s next to impossible to break into the actual building. If someone ever tried to break into your home, you’d definitely hear them! An intruder would have to pretty much remove the steel gear and lift the doors out of the frame. We’re quite certain that no home intruder would be willing to go through all that trouble! Twin point locks, which control the top and bottom locks, are the most aesthetically pleasing as they are built in the centre part of your bi-fold doors at the handle. Alternatively, you can use drop bolts and deadbolts (which usually are a standard lock); however, we recommend that you don’t use the former as your only method of securing your bi-fold doors.
