Things to consider when buying bi-folding doors
Bi-folding doors can completely revolutionise your living space. If you have a dark and dreary room that needs filling with light, the solution could be to install bi-folding doors and let the natural light flood into the living space. Alternatively, if you entertain frequently and want your parties to be both inside and outside you can fold back bi-folding doors to create a large space to entertain. The possibilities to bi-folding doors are endless, however, there are some things that you may need to consider before deciding which bi-folding doors you should install or if your property is suitable for the doors.
Area of the space
Before installing bi-folding doors you need to consider the space that is already in the room. The dimensions and size of the room will influence the cost of the project so this is important to note beforehand ensuring that you budget for the costs.
You can view the pre-set designs by dimensions here at ATT Fabrications, which span from 1790mm all the way up to 3590mm bi-folds. If your desired area is smaller or larger than these dimensions then we offer a bespoke service to help you get the doors of your dreams where you can design your own bi-folds in either Aluminium or UPVC.
If your space looks on to a public place or you suspect that people may look into your property (we all have one nosy neighbour) then you may want to consider installing blinds or remote operated blinds for times when you want more privacy. These don’t have to distract from the beauty of the windows, blinds can become a feature which accentuates and elevates the design of the bi-folds.
It is important to consider the materials, colours and finishes that you want from your bi-folding doors. You will want to continue with the theme of the decor already installed in your home to ensure that the doors don’t look out of place. Here at ATT Fabrications, we offer both aluminium bi-folds or UPVC bi-folds. Aluminium framed bi-folds are stronger than UPVC variations, however, that doesn’t mean that aluminium frames are automatically super heavy. Both aluminium and UPVC designs have been designed to ensure that you can easily fold back the doors without having to pull a muscle by using excessive force.
It is important to find the right colour for your space, a popular choice when deciding which colour to install is to pair the colour of the doors to the colour of the existing frames of the house. Here at ATT Fabrications, we have a range of colours and finishes for you to choose from including sleek white variations, anthracite grey, golden oak and more.
Determining which door colour to install can also be based on the decor of the interior space. We understand that matching this colour is important too, that is why we have designed the navigation of our website so that you can select and filter the designs available based on indoor/outdoor colour.
When installing our bi-folding doors we have a range of door handle colours for you to choose from. For moodier aesthetics you could install a range of coloured door handles including black, smokey chrome and satin silver. These colours will elevate the look of the doors making them look even more luxurious and appealing. For more traditional spaces you can implement a white, chrome or gold handle to keep in with the charm of the space.
The aesthetic of a home with bi-folding doors can look very impressive. By installing the doors your room will undoubtedly be brighter and more natural light will enter the space which has been scientifically proven to help boost mood. It can also make your living space more vibrant, happier and open which are all great improvements to implement.
The fully openable feature of bi-folding doors is one that is handy when you are entertaining guests. Let’s set the scene; it’s warm and you are hosting a BBQ party and you want to have a wide space to entertain. You can cook on the BBQ outside and cook even more in the kitchen and not have the indoor/outdoor divide of guests. Their impressive slick design will also impress your guests when the doors are closed allowing for a full view of your garden space.
Heat in our homes plays a big part in our everyday life. Temperatures can plummet in the winter, making you want to keep all the heat that you can within the property. But in Summer months we can often be left sweating on the sofa longing for a cool breeze. With bi-folding doors, the ability to keep heat in is supported by the double glazing windows which feature within the design of the doors. This will ensure that no heat escapes and more importantly that no cold wind or drafts enter into your home. On the flip side when the temperatures rise you can open up the bi-folds wide letting the cool breeze from outside to blow in.
An important element to consider is your access route. We know how amazing they are and the fold back feature will still excite you every time you do it, but in reality, you won’t constantly have the doors folded back. With that in mind, it is important to consider your access routes to and from your property. With our designs here at ATT Fabrications, we offer a range of pane designs in 3 paned, 4 paned and you guessed it 5 paned variations.
- With 3 and 5 pane designs, there is a master door which can be used for everyday use as a single traffic door.
- Our 4 pane design features an independent master door which can be used for access. The other 3 doors have the ability to slide in the opposite direction.
Open In / Open Out
With bi-folding doors, you need to consider whether you want your doors to fold inwardly or outwardly. With most designs, the common option is for the doors to fold outwardly. The doors will either stack internally in your home with ‘Open In’ designs whereas the doors will be external to your property if they are an ‘Open Out’ design.
Once you have considered all of these elements then you will probably have a good idea about the design that you want. Bi-folding doors are a great way to open up your living space and by incorporating elements of your outdoor space into the plan of your interior you can really give your home the contemporary update that it deserves. Here at ATT Fabrications, we offer a bespoke service for you to create the doors of your dreams.
